This month sees the opening of our next major exhibition Pre-Raphaelites: Drawings & Watercolours, and we celebrate art and archaeology with a weekend of free, drop-in family events. Plus, Young & Wild? Art in 1980s Germany opens in Gallery 8, and much more.

Free archaeology and art festival

Sat 16 & Sun 17 July

Join us for a fun weekend suitable for all the family.

Saturday celebrates all things archaeology as part of the national Festival of Archaeology. Travel back in time to the Iron Age and learn all about the Iceni. Free activities include: coin striking, making chocolate coins, storytelling & more.

On Sunday the festival is all about art. Come along and unleash your creativity by taking part in one of our activities inspired by the Museum's collection. Free activities include: dress up and become a living painting, paint a canvas, live music & more.

YOUNG & WILD?
Art in 1980s Germany
Punk, Painting & Prints

This vibrant, free exhibition brings together artworks by internationally acclaimed artists in the Neo-Expressionist movement, known as ‘Junge Wilde’ (‘young Fauves’), alongside works by a younger generation of 'Junge Wilde' artists, conveying the exuberant energy of this 80s West Berlin art scene.

See paintings, sculptures and works on paper by A.R. Penck, Georg Baselitz, and Markus Lüpertz, and drawings and prints by Elvira Bach, Ina Barfuss, Salomé and Luciano Castelli.

Journeys into the Iron Age and the Celtic arts

The UK's annual Festival of Archaeology runs from 16–31 July.

As part of the Ashmolean's participation in the festival, we're holding a series of talks which will be available to view both in the Museum and online.

Talks include: Pre-Roman Coinage of the Iceni, Celtic Art: Magic and Animism and Life and Death in the Early Iron Age.
